Models, Rules, and Deductive Reasoning
We formulate a simple theory of deductive reasoning based on mental models. One prediction of the theory is experimentally tested and found to be incorrect. The bearing of our results on contemporary theories of mental models is discussed. We then consider a potential objection to current rule-theories of deduction. Such theories picture deductive reasoning as the successive application of infe...
متن کاملMental models in deductive reasoning.
We report research investigating the role of mental models in deduction. The first study deals with conjunctive inferences (from one conjunction and two conditional premises) and disjunctive inferences (from one disjunction and the same two conditionals). The second study examines reasoning from multiple conditionals such as: If e then b; If a then b; If b then c; What follows between a and c? ...
متن کاملMental Models, Deductive Reasoning, and the Brain
This chapter considers the two main approaches to deductive thinking: theories based on formal rules of inference postulate that deduction is a syntactic process akin to a logical proof; the mental model theory postulates that it is a semantic process akin to the search for counterexamples. Experimental evidence bears out the predictions of the model theory: the more models needed for a deducti...
متن کاملSymbolic Deductive Reasoning using Connectionist Models
In this paper, we try to combine the possibility of symbolic deductive reasoning with the learning capability of the connectionist models. We introduce several algorithms for learning relations between concepts and finding paths in a transitive manner between learned concepts. An application that implements the proposed model is described and a number of case studies are presented.
متن کاملDeductive Reasoning
Deductive reasoning is the kind of reasoning in which, roughly, the truth of the input propositions (the premises) logically guarantees the truth of the output proposition (the conclusion), provided that no mistake has been made in the reasoning. The premises may be propositions that the reasoner believes or assumptions that the reasoner is exploring. Deductive reasoning contrasts with inductiv...
